“This spiritual path is a love story of truth-seeking and truth-finding, of the knowledge of love and the love of knowledge, and of a topsy-turvy magical ride penetrating uncharted universes.”
KAREN JOHNSON - Co-Founder of the Diamond Approach
In the necessary process of developing our everyday self, we grow apart from our truer self, our authenticity. As a result, our day-to-day experience can feel a pale imitation of something more real.
The degree of estrangement from who we truly are, and the circumstances under which this happens, vary from person to person. For many people, the associated feelings of alienation, discontent and purposelessness become an existential crisis.
This moment of truth can evoke a yearning for something different and deeper. Turning inward to discover our depth is often expressed as a desire to discover, ‘Who am I really?’, ‘Where do I truly belong?’, ‘Is there more to life than what I am experiencing?’, and ‘What else can I be?’.
Feeling the drive for self-discovery to realise your spiritual nature and recognising that the external world will not provide what you long for, is a step towards waking-up and becoming a spiritual seeker on a path of self-awareness.
Are these experiences familiar to you?
The Diamond Approach path is a teaching that addresses the heartfelt longings and questions of spiritually oriented people living in the modern world.
Introducing the Diamond Approach
Through exploring the ordinary circumstances of everyday life, this teaching about the realisation of our human potential and how to live that realisation emerged. Here you can watch people talk about their experience on this unique path of self-discovery.
From the perspective of our teaching realising your spiritual nature is often experienced as a feeling of coming home through discovering and loving the truth of who you really are.
Here you can find out more about Diamond Approach Australia, the teachings we offer, and the spiritual practices we use to support your journey of self-discovery and spiritual awakening.
You can find answers to frequently asked questions such as is the Diamond Approach a religion (no) or a form of psychotherapy (no) here.

What helps us to turn towards the Truth?
Do we dare?
We often hear the spiritual journey or inner work being described as the Search for Truth. Or, people might say – “I just want to know the Truth, I am a seeker”.
What do we really mean when we say this? And, if we really want the Truth so much, why can it be so hard to find? Why does looking for Truth so often feel like a challenge ….. or a dare ….?
And, when you think about it, how do you know when you have found ‘truth’ anyway?
Attending this webinar, you will gain a deeper understanding about how your ideas and experiences of ‘truth’ – including being true, telling the truth, hearing the truth – might either help or hinder you on your inner journey.

The Flame: what fires us up for the inner journey home?
We each have our own unique story about what draws us to exploring our spiritual nature.
For some it’s a desire to be more real and authentic, for others a love of a deeper Truth that they have tasted and want more … It may be simple curiosity, or a wordless feeling that there is more to this business of living than there seems on the surface.
The ways are myriad, but they hold in common a wanting, that contains both a desire, and implicit in the desire a love for that which we want. The alive energy of that wanting can be experienced as an inner flame; anything from a gentle flicker of curiosity to a burning desire to be close to that which is real.
In this webinar you will have the opportunity to explore your own, unique story of wanting. You may taste how this wanting itself is a gift that can fuel and sustain. You may discover how this flame can guide you on your path towards something that our ordinary, egoic minds cannot find or grasp.

An Essential Conversation is a conversation that is important to have. In the Diamond Approach path, an Essential Conversation is also part of learning how to bring our spiritual development, our contact with our True Nature, with us into conversation in our daily life.
A couple times each year DAA students join with people interested in spiritual development to have an Essential Conversation together.
All topics or questions are welcome, and freely participated in. The sharing in an Essential Conversation can go quite deep. Often the exploration focuses on what brought us to inner work, how our lives have been impacted by the Diamond Approach path, or something happening in our lives or in the world that we want to understand more deeply.
We welcome you to join us in a free-flowing conversation and get to know us, both students and teachers, more personally.

Luminous Tenderness: a Retreat on Essential Compassion
The Diamond Approach path is a spiritual teaching that recognises the inherent synthesis between the spiritual and psychological, the ego and essence, the psyche and spirit. Here, the ego is not rejected or dismissed. We recognise that when it is approached with kindness, explored with openness, and understood for what it really is, our ego self becomes a portal that can open us up to the deeper truths of our spiritual nature.
Loving kindness, essential compassion, is needed for this process, and it is one of the treasures of our spiritual nature that can develop through it.
During this four day retreat, we will immerse ourselves in Essential Compassion, and its role in the inner journey, into a deep understanding of our historical self, and through it to the discovery and development of our essence. We will look at how we move from one to the other, distinguishing the building blocks of our ego, and the thresholds within it through which our deeper nature can flow.
Compassion, the living presence of loving kindness, is the miraculous ingredient that opens the heart. It helps us to open to our hurts, and move through them. It carries us, surely and directly, into the truth of who we are, the inexhaustible richness of Being.
In this retreat, we will explore the nature of this central quality of our human essence. We will illuminate and work through some of the important obstacles to experiencing it directly, and to expressing its exquisite tenderness and beauty in our inner journey and our daily lives.
Whether you are newly on the spiritual path, or have already had meditative or transcendent experiences, this work can help you open up, and reveal how to be free in this world while knowing you are beyond it.
From your experience of participating in this retreat you may discover:
- the nature of essential compassion
- how it differs from our usual ideas of compassion
- how it is blocked by particular emotional issues
- the role compassion plays on the inner journey
- how to work with and move through experiences of pain and hurt
- how your ego developed in relationship
- the impact those internalised relationships have on your life now
- how to recognise when resistance arises on your inner journey and how to approach it
- the ego’s inherent tendency to look to the outside or to another to fill important needs and the dissatisfaction this can bring
- how deep fulfillment can arise when you are open and curious about your dissatisfaction or emptiness
- the deeper truths of your spiritual nature.
This four-day retreat uses an experiential approach that includes teacher talks and spiritual practices such as open-end inquiry, meditation and awareness practices.
Teaching sessions generally start with a meditation practice followed by a specific teaching related to the theme of the retreat. You will have the opportunity to deepen your personal exploration through experiential exercises, usually in pairs or triads and sometimes in a small group, before re-joining the large group to process what has emerged in response to the teaching.
The day is divided into two, three-hour sessions with an hour and a half break for lunch.
We’re excited to be able to meet safely in person again! The retreat will be held in Sydney, at the Woolcock Institute in Glebe. It will also be live-streamed over Zoom, however, we encourage those of you who are able to attend in person.
